On Saturday 13th July, CEE Notts hosted a charity film-screening in the Mansfield Central Library auditorium. The event was then followed by a bake sale in the First Art gallery and exhibition space which raised £118.95 for UNICEF UK as part of the Cook for Ukraine programme.

The film ‘A Community in Exile’ was created as part of a millennium project by public historian Leo Jurkiw and professor Nick Baron at the University of Nottingham, as an attempt to record the prehistory of the Nottingham Ukrainian Community. This truly thought-provoking documentary collated nine oral interviews of elderly members of the Ukrainian community in Nottingham between 1999-2000. Each and every single one of these stories was unique, yet they were all bound together by the invisible string of war, displacement and tremendous loss. Their stories also gave account of repression, civil conflict, separation from people and places they once called home. This documentary serves as a reminder of the effect of war on ordinary people and provides an insight into the often dangerous process of emigration.
To continue recording important histories overlooked by traditional institutions, we are recording stories from Mansfield’s Central and Eastern European communities as part of our Capturing Shadows programme funded by Historic England. Whether it’s a short story reminiscing about the smell of salami in the indoor market, to a more in depth interview about settling in the town and the communities established here, we want to preserve your memories.
