Capturing Shadows is a new project to collect and preserve stories of Mansfield’s Central and Eastern European communities. Capturing Shadows is being funded by Historic England’s Everyday Heritage grant programme, celebrating working class histories.

For our upcoming exhibition and archive we need your help! Many local people will have memories of the Central and Eastern European community in Mansfield, from the smell of salami in the old indoor market, to Latvian Society dances and January Christmas parties at the Ukrainian Social Club.

Perhaps you have a ticket or receipt from having your favourite pair of flared trousers made at Julian Jelonek’s on Clumber Street, or a photo from an evening out at the Ukrainian Social Club on Nottingham Road. Everything will help us create an amazing exhibition that truly captures this important part of the community, and build a public digital archive for future generations to enjoy.
