Celebrating diversity in the Balkans

1–2 minutes

Balkanism is a digital and educational collective dedicated to exploring Balkan culture, history, society, and identity, serving as both a visual arts platform and an annual publication. Their core mission is to strengthen interethnic relations in the Balkans and among diaspora communities worldwide with a progressive educational approach. Launched earlier this year, their new publication ‘Diversity as Strength’ showcases the rich and varied cultural, social, historical, and artistic expressions of contributors from the Balkans and its diaspora. The significance of showcasing the region in this honest and united way is highlighted by the support from the Balkan community, and a successful crowdfunding campaign that saw £4000 raised to assist the publications completion.

The issue really delves into the truly vibrant diversity in the Balkans, from Katarina Sabados’ ‘multijelek’ exploring her families varied ethnic heritage through intricate embroidery, to vital research of Kosovan life by the Oral History Initiative. Personal narratives, vivid photos, and striking artwork come together to illustrate the incredible creativity, culture, and heritage of the region.
